Wow, wow, wow . . . yes, we are here in the DR! Our first day of the trip was all travel, a total of 1,459 miles. In two different groups, we took flights from Baltimore with layovers in New Jersey and New York. While waiting to board, we spent time playing card games, eating, napping, and most importantly, getting to know each other better.

We had a little bit of turbulence on the way, but overall, very smooth flights. When our wheels touched down for the last time, we were treated to a special Dominican reaction . . . the passengers burst out in screams and applause. At first when we heard the noise, we thought something was wrong with the plane, but no! They were just glad to be home, safe and sound. J

Fortunately, we made it through security and customs with no problems. Plus, all of our baggage arrived intact with all necessary items . . . including sunscreen, bug spray, and our water bottles! A shuttle bus picked us up and took us to the compound where we’re staying in Santiago. It’s gated and locked at night, very safe. Our rooms are dorm-style with bunk-beds for the ladies. No air conditioning, but at least equipped with some overhead ceiling fans.

A few things we’ve been adjusting to:
·       Potty Time – no TP in the toilet. Yep, that’s right! Due to their plumbing issues, all paper goes in a trash can next to the commode, brown side down. If you forget, you have to fish it out. Gross!
·       Showers – COLD! No warm water at all. And sometimes it only comes out in a trickle.
·       Food – Delicious! The staff at the compound prepare our breakfasts and dinners, including plantains (like bananas), yucca (like sweet potatoes), and some of the best chicken we’ve had in our lives . . . or at least we think it was chicken. ;)
·       Each Other – We’ve been blessed with the opportunity to share this experience with fun, supportive, and hard-working people who love the Lord and the people in the DR. Being with one another makes this trip memorable and meaningful for all of us!
